The first volume of this history set forth _the condition of the Navy When the war began, the work of preparation for the great conflict, the character of our ships, and particularly of our iron-clads and of our new American guns. The actual battle was also traced from the rescue of the old frigate Constitution at Annapolis, to the destruction of the rebel fleet at Memphis. This narrative covered a little more than a year of active opera tions.
